Rhys Llwyd Davies - Architect | Pensaer, is based in the market town of Bala in southern Snowdonia, and is involved in a variety of projects throughout North Wales.
The practice was established in 2007 with the aim of improving the built environment by concentrating on the character of buldings, spirit of place, and sustainabilty (environmental and social). It has since established a contemporary vernacular architectural language as well as a reputaton for sensitve alterations / renovations of traditional and historic buildings. Central to our approach is the principle that architecture should reflect it's time and place - and that historic buildings and contemporary architecture both have their value. We believe that a detailed appreciation of our historic buildings, and traditional / local building techniques, can inform a contemporary architecture that is rooted to it's locality while avoiding thoughtless, literal re-use of a 'traditional' style for it's own sake.
Standing outside the office window is a statue to the political pioneer Thomas Ellis. Back in 1896, it was he who first called for a Welsh School of Architecture, and setting a challange for us still today;
... to make our buildings well adapted to their purpose, and so thoughfully designed as to be a joy and a blessing to see and even to pass near.
